Hunting Red Stag

The red stag, sometimes known as the Monarch of the Mountain, is considered by hunters to be the most beautiful antlered animal in the world. A mature stag can have a rack with more than 12 points weighing up to 12 pounds. A trophy animal's weight ranges from 400 pounds to over 600 pounds, and they stand 48 inches at the shoulder.

Red stags have a wide distribution throughout the world. They are found in Europe, particularly Romania, Hungary, Austria, southwestern Asia, New Zealand, Australia, Argentina, Chile, Iran, North Africa, Canada, the United States, England, Scotland, Ireland, Crimea, Macedonia, and Croatia.

Africa Red Stag Hunting

Red stags inhabit the Atlas Mountains of northwest Africa in the Atlas Mountains on the border between Morocco and Tunisia. They are the only species of deer in Africa other than those found on game farms.

Argentina Red Stag Hunting

Over the past 20 years, Argentina has become more open to hunters from other countries worldwide. The best hunting is in the mountains of the Patagonia region. Either horses or four-wheel drive vehicles are used. Hunting is by spotting from the tops of mountains, then stalking the animal.

The La Pampa region, where the stag was first introduced, is primarily flat and hunting is easier than in the mountains. The stag tends to stay in the grasslands' bushier areas, where the best hunting is found.

Australia Red Stag Hunting

Red stag can be hunted in New South Wales (NSW), Queensland, and Victoria in Australia. You will need a current game license and an Australian Firearms License for NSW. The season runs from March 1 to October 31.

Queensland has no permit or seasonal restrictions to hunt red stag. You will have to have the proper license and landowner permission to hunt. Victoria has no restrictions or bag limits. The largest concentration of stags is in the Grampians National Park.

Austria Red Stag Hunting

Austria produces record red stags that score high in the SCI record book every year. Other available animals include fallow deer, Alpine Ibex, wild boar, chamois, Mouflon sheep, and roebuck. The best hunting is in the Alps, and the season runs from September to the first week in October.

Canada Red Stag Hunting

The Laurentian Mountains of Quebec have produced more world-record red stags than any other part of Canada. The hunting season is from August through November. No permit or license is required if you hunt on a private hunting farm.

Croatia Red Stag Hunting

Despite only having 21,851 square miles of land, Croatia has some of the best red stag hunting in Europe. Stags can be hunted from August 16th to January 14th. The best hunting is from September 5th to September 20th during the rut. Most hunting is done by spot and stalk with your guide taking you to the most popular rut areas.

Red stag can be found throughout Croatia. The Baranja Region between the Danube and the Drava rivers is best known for its large stags. The Croatian mountain terrain makes for some challenging hunting, so the hunter needs to be in good condition.

Macedonia Red Stag Hunting

In Macedonia, there are two areas known for European red stag hunts: Jasen and Nidze. The stag quality has dramatically improved over the past ten years. Hunting season is between August 1 and March 31.

New Zealand Red Stag Hunting

Red stags were introduced into New Zealand by European settlers in 1851. Hunters have the choice of two hunts: free-range or fair chase on leased land. Shots can be anywhere from 80 to 250 yards. There is no seasonal restriction on hunting red stag, but the regular hunting season is from February to August, with the best months being during the rut - March to mid-May. Some New Zealand stags have been over 450 points in the SCI record book.

Romania Red Stag Hunting

Romania is one country where you can hunt like it was two hundred years ago. The Carpathian Mountains have consistently produced some of the largest red stag trophies ever taken. There are three areas for a red stag in Romania: western Romania, the Covasna Country in Transylvania, and the Calimani Mountains in the Carpathians. Two hunting methods are employed: stalking or horseback. Also available to hunt are roe deer, bear, and wild boar.

Hungary's red stag hunting season runs from early September in the south to early October in the north. The best and largest red stag lives around Lake Balaton, fifty miles south of Budapest. Red stag is native to Hungary, and there is a large population of trophy animals to choose from.

Scotland Red Stag Hunting

Scotland’s red stag hunting is world-renowned. Hunting the red stag in the Scottish Highlands is challenging and unforgettable. The deer herds consist of 10 to 100 animals, and your accompanying stalker or ghillie will select a suitable trophy stag for you to shoot. Your final approach may be on hands and knees to avoid spooking the animals. Combining your hunt with some salmon or trout fishing in Scotland’s famous rivers is also possible.

Serbia Red Stag Hunting

Serbia has two types of red stag: one on the Danube River with shorter, wider-based antlers, and one Carpathian with longer, thinner antlers. The largest stags are found along the Danube River and its tributary, the Sava River.

South America Red Stag Hunting

South America has some of the best red stag hunting in the world. There is a long history of hunting in Argentina. The red stag was introduced specifically for hunting in 1906 in the La Pampa Province. Later, in 1920, they were brought to the Andean Mountains and into Chile in 1928.

Spain Red Stag Hunting

The red stag hunting season in Spain runs from mid-September to mid-February. The red stag rut begins in mid-September. The terrain that red stags are hunted on in Spain varies from rolling grass-covered hills to a more rugged and mountainous country. The lodges that these hunts are done from are typically in the luxury category. There are lots of other animals that can be hunted and there are lots of activities in the surrounding areas. This is the perfect hunt to bring someone special along on!

United States Red Stag Hunting

Red stag hunting is prevalent in the United States. Many states have trophy red stag hunts. Texas, Missouri, Michigan, Illinois, and Kansas are just a few states with large numbers of red stags on offer.

Texas, in particular, offers year-round hunts that can be done with any method you prefer. Whether you spot and stalk, hunt from a blind, use a rifle, pistol, or bow, or hunt African safari style. It’s all up to you. Red stags were first placed on game ranches in the Texas hill country in the early 1930s, and their numbers have grown to over 5,000 in 82 Texas counties.
