Travel to the Texas hill country, one of the few places in the world where you can hunt the rare scimitar oryx. This animal was once found all across central North Africa, but now only exists in rare reintroduced populations and exotic game ranches. Scimitar Oryx Importability 

Scimitar oryx are not importable into the US from Africa. But you can shoot one and take it home from Texas!

About the Scimitar Oryx:

The scimitar oryx is a horned species of antelope that once roamed wild across North Africa. However, the species was declared extinct in the wild in the year 2000, and at the time only existed on exotic game ranches. In 2016, it was reintroduced into the wild in Africa, and as of 2021, there are around 400 individuals living in low or no-fence areas. It is a unique animal and highly specialized to its former dry habitat of North Africa. It is able to go months and even years without drinking water and is able to obtain all the moisture it needs from the foliage it grazes on. Its body temperature is able to rise to nearly 116 degrees before plateauing as its circulatory system is specially evolved to cool the blood before it reaches major organs such as the brain. Males are larger than females and can grow up to 460 pounds, while females can usually only grow up to 310 pounds. You can expect your bull to have horns between 36” and 40”, with the option to upgrade to a guaranteed high fence 40”+ bull starting at $6,000 depending on availability. 

The scimitar oryx has a long history in antiquity as well. Ancient Egyptians tamed these animals and used them for food, and they often sacrificed them as offerings to the gods as well. Ancient Roman nobility bred them for game hunting and for food. Their hide was also used for shields during the Middle Ages, as it was durable and had superior quality to other animal hides at the time. It has also been speculated that this animal was the origin of the myth of the unicorn. It is thought that sightings of scimitar oryx with broken-off horns may have contributed to this myth, as the horns are made from a thin hollow bone that can easily break. Both Aristotle and Pliny the Elder wrote about the scimitar oryx and its relationship with the unicorn myth, stating that this animal was the unicorn’s “prototype.” 

Scimitar Oryx Hunting Area and Terrain:

This outfitter uses a number of different ranches for this hunt. These high fence ranches range in size up to 6,000 acres and generally have the same hilly, rocky terrain. These areas have cedar and cactus brush which provides light cover for the animals. Since a lot of this terrain is off-road, your guide will have a 4x4 vehicle to help navigate the ranch's terrain. If you are interested in a free-range scimitar oryx, these options are available upon request.

Scimitar Oryx Hunting Seasons in Texas:

Texas allows Scimitar oryx hunting year-round. These animals keep their horns throughout the year and never shed them in their lifetime. However, this outfitter recommends coming between the months of December to April, as the cooler temperatures allow them to be more active during the day.

Scimitar Oryx Hunting Lodge and Accommodations:

The lodge you will be staying at during your scimitar oryx hunt offers seven private bedrooms as well as a master bedroom with a connected master bathroom. The seven private bedrooms do not have bathrooms en suite to them. It is a 2-star lodge, with the accommodations being modest. The beds are comfortable, and the food is hearty Texas cuisine.  

The lodge’s communal room includes a bar, pool table, tv, and couch. There is full cell and internet service while at the lodge, so it is easy to stay connected to family and friends or do any work you may need to while there. 

A Typical Day Hunting Scimitar Oryx

These hunts run from noon on the day of your arrival until noon on the day of your departure, with two full hunting days in between. This makes up 3 full days of hunting.

Day 1      Arrive at noon - Hunt p.m.

Day 2-3   Full Hunting Days

Day 4      Hunt a.m. - Depart noon

Depending on time of year, and other various factors. These hunts can be conducted in a multitude of ways. Blind hunting, safari style, or spot and stalk. The specific method in which the hunt will happen will not be determined until the week or potentially the day of your hunt. With that being said, the following is a general hunt description, any in-depth questions or preferences can be discussed at time of booking. 

You’ll arrive at the lodge in the afternoon on the first day, where you can get settled in and get your things put away in your room. Once you get squared away, you will be taken to a local store to purchase a Texas hunting license if you did not already get one beforehand. After this, you can head to the range and ensure your rifle is still zeroed after your travel. If everything checks out, it's time to start hunting! You and your guide will depart from the lodge to the game ranch utilized at mid-afternoon.

Once it begins to get dark, you’ll head out of the game ranch and back to the main lodge. Dinner will be served upon arrival, where you and your guide can discuss the next day’s plans and strategy. After dinner, you’ll have a few hours to yourself where you can hang out, work, or catch up back home before getting to bed. 

The next morning, you can expect to wake up early morning and grab a coffee, muffin, or another small breakfast snack to eat before heading out on the morning hunt. You’ll leave the lodge and get to the game ranches just as the sun is coming up. The morning hunting will stop when it begins to get hot, or you and your guide decide to let the ranch rest for the middle of the day when the animals would usually be laid up resting.  You and your guide will head back to the lodge and have brunch. Then the afternoon is yours to do with as you please before you get back out midafternoon again, to begin the evening hunt!

Trophy Care and Shipping:

As soon as you shoot your trophy, your guide will get pictures of you and your scimitar oryx in the field. Then it will be field-dressed and loaded onto the truck to be brought back to the main lodge. At this point, the cape will be skinned, and if you are using the local taxidermist the outfitter utilizes, they will tag it accordingly. If not, the cape and horns will be transferred to The Wildlife Gallery in Ingram for processing before being sent to your taxidermist.

If bringing your own rifle, the outfitter’s recommended calibers are .243 Winchester to .300 Winchester Magnum.

Getting There:

You will first fly into San Antonio International Airport. From there, you’ll be picked up by the outfitter and driven directly to the lodge to begin hunting that afternoon. It is a 2-hour drive from the airport to the main lodge. If you will be driving there, you will drive to Junction Texas, where you will then be met by the outfitter. 

Deposit and Payment Policy:

A 50% deposit of $4,250 is due to book this scimitar oryx hunt. The full balance must be paid at the time of arrival at the lodge. This outfitter accepts credit/debit cards, checks, and cash.

Cancellation Policy:

Deposits are non-refundable. Dates can be transferable at the outfitter's discretion, and only to a different person with the prior approval of the outfitter. Upon any rescheduling, a $150 fee is to be paid directly to the booking agent.
