About the Brown Bear
The Brown Bear is Europe's largest carnivore, with Croatia being home to over 900 bears! The bears that call the beech-fir forests of Croatia home can weigh up to 350 kg. They have an excellent sense of smell, are adept swimmers, and are incredible climbers for their size. Their distinctive physical features include small beady eyes and little rounded ears. The brown bear has a very large body size and a pronounced shoulder hump. They spend a great deal of their time eating in order to build up fat stores for the winter months, so drawing them in with bait is a great way to hunt these animals! They often come out at dusk and will approach the bait in the moonlight, making for an exciting night hunt!
Brown Bear Hunting Area and Terrain
This outfitter uses different hunting areas for brown bears, ranging in size from 6,000 acres to 50,000 acres. The terrain is hilly and rocky and will have some wooded areas. You will be hunting out of a high seat for your brown bear, so you will only need to walk a few hundred yards or so over this terrain from the vehicle to reach the stand. Some of the high seats also have a bed, so you can relax while your guide is waiting for a bear to approach.
Croatia Brown Bear Hunting Season
The hunting season for brown bears in Croatia runs from February 15th to May 15th, and again from October 16th through December 31st. This outfitter recommends coming in either the months of April or October for the best hunting experience.
About the Croatian Brown Bear Outfitter
This outfitter has been hunting these specific grounds for over five years and knows the land well. I came upon this outfitter through one of my good clients who has hunted with him several times before. He comes highly recommended and this will be a brown bear hunt on bait in Croatia that you will truly enjoy!
Croatian Brown Bear Hunt Lodge and Accommodations
You will stay at a luxury 4-star hotel on your bear hunt. The hotel has a fantastic grommet restaurant and includes the following amenities
- Turkish Sauna
- Finnish Sauna
- Whirlpool
- Massages
You will eat the local cuisine on this hunt and the guide has a friend that operates a nearby winery, so you will likely eat at his winery one day and sample his wines.
This hotel also has full wifi and cell service to keep you connected while on your trip.
A Typical Day Hunting Brown Bear in Croatia
Depending on if you arrive before 2:00 PM local time, you can hunt the same night as you fly in. You will first sight in your rifle to make sure it is still on after transit. Then, you and your guide will enjoy your evening meal and discuss what part of the concession you will be heading to that night. From there, you and your guide will head out to the high seat that you’ll be hunting in for the night. Some of the high seats have beds, so you can relax while waiting for a bear to come in to visit the bait. The bears come in the moonlight, so when there is some snow on the ground it is easy to see the contrast between them and the ground. You and your guide will also be able to observe the bear with night vision scopes and thermal optics to get a better look before taking your shot, although it is not legal in Croatia to shoot with these scopes, it is only legal to observe the bear.
Once you and your guide decide this is the right bear for you, you’ll use your rifle and standard scope to take your shot! Once you do shoot your trophy, the following price schedule applies, which you will need to pay before leaving:
300-350 cic points - 7,500 euros
350-400 cic points - 12,500 euros

Trophy Care and Shipping
Once you shoot your bear and take trophy photos, it will be hauled back to camp and skinned there. It will then be stored in a freezer before being taken to the taxidermist. The cost is two euros per point in preparing it to be sent.
