Hunt your trophy axis deer with one of the most experienced outfitters in Texas! You’ll stay at a 2-star lodge 1.5  hours from San Antonio and have the opportunity to harvest an axis deer up to 34”!

About the Axis Deer:

Axis deer originated in India and were brought to Texas in the 1930s. Also known as the chital deer, they developed self-sustaining populations here and began to flourish. The upper part of the deer is golden to brown and covered in white spots. The underside, throat, butt, ears, tail, and feet are pure white. All axis deer have a distinct dark brown stripe that runs from the tip of their tail all the way up the backbone through the neck. Mature males can grow up to 250 pounds, while females stay smaller and can grow up to 150 pounds. Male deer sports antlers with three distinct points on each side. You can expect the axis deer you harvest to be between 32” and 34”, with the option to upgrade to a guaranteed 34”+.

Axis deer are active during the mornings and evenings and tend to bed down under shade during the heat of the day. While traveling, avis deer walk single file on well-defined trails. Most of their travel is done during the summer months in search of new food and water sources. If spooked, they first will face the potential danger, then flee all at once in a group. Their diet consists of young shoots of grass, herbs, shrubs, fruits, and other miscellaneous foliage. Male axis deer are known to stand on their hind legs to reach fruits and desirable leaves up in tall branches. When you come down to hunt axis deer in Texas, you’ll see firsthand the habits of these animals and experience just how exciting of a hunt it is.

Axis Deer Hunting Area and Terrain:

This outfitter has access to a multitude of different ranches that he uses to hunt axis deer that range in size up to 6,000 acres. Most of these ranches have generally rocky terrain with some rolling hills. There are occasional patches of cactus and cedar brush cover. Because of the area, your guide will have a 4x4 vehicle to traverse this off-road terrain. All of these ranches are high-fence locations. Free-range specialty options are also available upon request, as in many areas, these animals have escaped and proliferated.

Axis Deer Hunting Seasons in Texas:

A Typical Day Hunting Axis Deer

These hunts run from noon on the day of your arrival until noon on the day of your departure, with two full hunting days in between. This makes up 3 full days of hunting.

Day 1      Arrive at noon - Hunt p.m.

Day 2-3   Full Hunting Days

Day 4      Hunt a.m. - Depart noon

Depending on the time of year, and other various factors. These hunts can be conducted in a multitude of ways. Blind hunting, safari style, or spot and stalk. The specific method in which the hunt will happen will not be determined until the week or potentially the day of your hunt. With that being said, the following is a general hunt description, any in-depth questions or preferences can be discussed at the time of booking. In the summer months, hunting axis deer at night with a spotlight may be an option, as they are more active at night during the summer months.

You’ll arrive at the lodge in the afternoon on the first day, where you can get settled in and get your things put away in your room. Once you get squared away, you will be taken to a local store to purchase a Texas hunting license if you did not already get one beforehand. After this, you can head to the range and ensure your rifle is still zeroed after your travel. If everything checks out, it's time to start hunting! You and your guide will depart from the lodge to the game ranch utilized at mid-afternoon.

Once it begins to get dark, you’ll head out of the game ranch and back to the main lodge. Dinner will be served upon arrival, where you and your guide can discuss the next day’s plans and strategy. After dinner, you’ll have a few hours to yourself where you can hang out, work, or catch up back home before getting to bed.

The next morning, you can expect to wake up early morning and grab a coffee, muffin, or another small breakfast snack to eat before heading out on the morning hunt. You’ll leave the lodge and get to the game ranches just as the sun is coming up. The morning hunting will stop when it begins to get hot, or you and your guide decide to let the ranch rest for the middle of the day when the animals would usually be laid up resting.  You and your guide will head back to the lodge and have brunch. Then the afternoon is yours to do with as you please before you get back out midafternoon again, to begin the evening hunt!
