This is a hunt in the hills of Western Pakistan for Afghan Urial. During this hunt, you will stay in a guest house in a village and venture out each day from there to look for a trophy Afghan Urial.
This hunt is like stepping back over a century in time. The areas are remote, the terrain is rugged, and the scenery is breathtaking. The people live in somewhat primitive conditions. Weather can delay travel. This hunt will be a true adventure that you will remember and cherish for many years!
The outfitter is highly experienced and has guided many successful hunts over the years. The expected success rate on this hunt is 100%.
The Afghan Urial Hunting Area / Terrain
Afghan Urials are found most frequently at elevations ranging from 600m (1,600 ft) to 1000m+ (3200 ft+) above sea level. They prefer hilly and mountainous terrain. Depending on the area selected for your hunt, you will be walking in the hills, and long walks are the rule rather than the exception. The terrain has a lot of loose rocks and gravel, so a stable mountain boot is a must!
The outfitter has a remote, very demanding area where bigger Afghan Urials may be found. To access these areas, the hunter needs to be in excellent shape, and adding a hunting day or two will give you more time to search for that special trophy of a lifetime.
The Afghan Urial
The Afghan Urial (Ovis orientalis cycloceros) is a goat found only in Tajikistan, Afghanistan, and Pakistan.
The average size of Afghan Urials shot in these areas is around 25” and upwards. Urials 30”+ are present and some exceptional trophies in this range are taken each year but are not guaranteed.
The Afghan Urial Outfitter
This outfitter has spent his entire life hunting in these regions, outfitting in Pakistan, and has a thorough understanding of everything, including:
- Document Preparation
- Bidding for the best hunting areas
- Spending time in the field year-round
- Having contacts in many villages
- Speaking the local dialects
- Glowing references
Afghan Urial Travel
All areas that will be used for hunting are safe areas and are not in regions with insurgent activity. Over a period of many years, the outfitter has conducted these hunts without any safety issues.
Arrival is at Islamabad International Airport (also known as Benazir International) International flights normally arrive after midnight. You will be met by the outfitter’s representative at the international arrivals for clearance of your rifle then transfer to domestic departure for your domestic flight. You’ll have breakfast while waiting for your morning flight. Then you will take a domestic flight to Quetta. It is about a 1 ½ hour flight to Quetta from Islamabad. The outfitter will meet you in Quetta, where you will begin your drive to the guest house you will be staying at.
Local villagers keep the outfitter updated about trophy sightings they have seen, and the outfitter prescouts areas before you arrive. The morning after you arrive, you’ll have breakfast and then begin hunting Afghan Urial in the surrounding hills. You will hike and glass each day for a suitable trophy ibex. Once a suitable trophy is spotted, you will execute a stalk to get into shooting range. If one of the outfitters’ scouts finds a trophy, you’ll be taken directly to where it was seen to stalk and get into a good shooting position.
The hike back down to the village will commence once your Afghan Urial has been taken and skinned.

The Afghan Urial Hunting Accommodations
The accommodations are basic but comfortable. You will have a private bedroom and bathroom. This is not a luxury hunt but rather a hunt that is conducted from remote villages lacking many modern amenities.
This outfitter hunts Afghan Urial in two areas in Balochistan both with very different terrain. The first area is slightly easier to navigate and is closer to roads and villages, however there are fewer and smaller Afghan Urials there. The second place is much more remote and much more rugged. It is very demanding and you should be in excellent shape to hunt from here. The trophy size will not be as good in the closer areas as in some of the more remote areas but will allow a hunter with mobility issues to still have a successful hunt and harvest a Urial.
For the hunter wanting the biggest trophy, adding an extra day or two at $600 / day and being in mountain shape will up your odds of coming away with that absolute monster of the mountains!
