About the Whitetail Deer:
In the United States, whitetail deer are most often found east of the Rocky Mountains. Texas has the most whitetail deer population out of any other state with around 5.3 million deer that roam the countryside. These deer are very wary of predators and are easily spooked, making them a tough species to hunt and sneak up on. The deer will blow if they are spotted by a predator or otherwise feel that they are in danger. This alerts other nearby deer that there is danger in the area. After blowing, the deer will flee. When fleeing, the undersides of their tail pop up, and the flash of white fur that accompanies that serves as a secondary signal to other deer in the area that it’s time to run!
Whitetail deer are native to North, Central, and South America, and have been hunted nearly as long as there have been humans in these areas. There are ancient records that show whitetails being hunted for their hides, horns, and meat, as well as sports purposes. The deer almost went extinct during the late 1800s due to a wave of overhunting. However, whitetail’s numbers have since shot back up, reaching pre-colonization levels according to a 2017 study. Whitetails were nearly hunted to extinction during the late 1800s, but as of 2017, their numbers have rebounded back to pre-colonization levels. Deer often overpopulate areas as well due to human-caused declines in predator populations. Hunting can be used as a stand-in conservation tool in cases like this. On this Texas hill-country managed lands deer hunt, you can expect your buck to score between 160” - 220”.
