These Texas elk hunts are conducted on high fence ranches that produce very high-quality animals! You’ll stay at a hunting lodge with seven bedrooms, good food, and comfortable beds. Plus, this hunt is located domestically within the continental United States, so clearing customs is never an issue and shipping of trophies is straightforward and easy! This outfitter offers elk up to 330” for $8500, 331" - 360" for $11,500, and can provide pricing for 360”+ on request.

About the Elk:

Elk are one of the largest mammals in North America, weighing an average of 720 pounds. Also known as the wapiti from the Native American word meaning “white rump”, there were an estimated ten million individuals on the continent prior to European colonization. Nowadays, there are around one million elk in North America distributed across both the Rocky and Appalachian mountain ranges. 

Elk are very social animals, with herds reaching up to 400 individuals in the summer. During non-summer months, herds are usually segregated between males and females. Males will form small groups while females will form bigger herds during these times. These segregated groups merge during the mating season, which is usually around late August. Males make loud, high-pitched vocalizations to attract mates, and also participate in antler sparring with other males to compete for females. To prepare for mating, a male will flick his tongue at a female to indicate mating. If she accepts, he will lick the female and then mate. 

Elk shed their antlers annually. While growing, a soft layer of highly vascularized skin known as velvet covers the antlers, providing key nutrients and substances for the antler to grow. This velvet is shed in the summer months once the antlers have fully developed. Elk antlers can grow at a rate of just under 1 inch per day, and bulls usually have six tines on each antler side. Antler growth is driven by testosterone, and once testosterone levels drop in late winter and early spring, the antlers are shed then as well. You can expect your bull to have antlers between 300” - 330” at the hunt price of $8,500. If you’d like to upgrade to an elk between 331” - 360”, this outfitter can provide that for $11,500 plus daily rates. Elk Hunting Area and Terrain:

This outfitter uses different game ranches for these Texas Hill Country bull elk hunts. They range in distance anywhere from 10 minutes to one hour away from the main lodge. All the ranches in this area are rocky and somewhat hilly. There is some cedar and cactus brush that provide cover. The ranch roads are all off-road trails, so your guide will have a 4x4 vehicle to traverse the terrain.

Elk Hunting Seasons in Texas:

While Texas does not impose a season for hunting elk, the outfitter recommends that this hunt be taken in September.

Texas Hill Country Bull Elk Hunting Lodge and Accommodations:

This lodge offers seven private bedrooms and an additional master bedroom with an en-suite bathroom. The other seven rooms do not have bathrooms en suite to the rooms but share a common bathroom and shower. The lodge is a 2-star and is simple but clean. The beds are comfortable and provide a good night's rest after a long day hunting.

There is also a communal room in the lodge which has a bar, pool table, sofa, and tv. There is full cell phone and internet service at camp as well, so staying connected to work or family back home is easy. The food is good and you can expect it to be the usual hearty Texas cuisine. 

A Typical Day Hunting Elk:

These hunts run from noon on the day of your arrival until noon on the day of your departure, with two full hunting days in between. This makes up 3 full days of hunting.

Day 1            Arrive at noon - Hunt p.m.

Day 2 & 3     Full Hunting Days

Day 4            Hunt a.m. - Depart noon

Depending on the time of year and other various factors, these hunts can be conducted in a multitude of ways, including blind hunting, safari style, or spot and stalk. The specific method in which the hunt will happen will not be determined until the week or potentially the day of your hunt. With that being said, the following is a general hunt description, any in-depth questions or preferences can be discussed at the time of booking. 

You’ll arrive at the lodge in the afternoon on the first day, where you can get settled in and get your things put away in your room. Once you get squared away, you will be taken to a local store to purchase a Texas hunting license if you did not already get one beforehand. After this, you can head to the range and ensure your rifle is still zeroed after your trip. If everything checks out, it's time to start hunting! You and your guide will depart from the lodge midafternoon to the  ranch you will hunt on.

Once it begins to get dark, you’ll head out of the game ranch and back to the main lodge. Dinner will be served upon arrival, where you and your guide can discuss the next day’s plans and strategy. After dinner, you’ll have a few hours to yourself where you can hang out, work, or catch up back home before getting to bed. 

The next morning, you can expect to wake up early morning and grab a coffee, muffin, or other breakfast snacks to eat before heading out on the morning hunt. You’ll leave the lodge and get to the game ranch just as the sun is coming up. The morning hunting will stop when it begins to get hot, or you and your guide decide to let the ranch rest for the middle of the day when the animals would usually be laid up resting in the shade.

You and your guide will head back to the lodge and have brunch. Then the afternoon is yours to do with as you please before you get back out midafternoon again, to begin the late afternoon hunt!

Trophy Care and Shipping:

Once you down your elk, you and your guide will position it and take your trophy pictures. Then it will be field dressed and loaded into the truck. Back at the main lodge, your elk will be skinned and tagged as yours. If you are using the outfitter’s taxidermist, the animal cape and antlers will be brought there immediately. If you will have it shipped to a different taxidermist, the cape and horns will be transferred to The Wildlife Gallery in Ingram for processing and will then be shipped from there.

If bringing your own rifle, the outfitter’s recommended calibers are .243 Winchester to .300 Winchester Magnum.

Getting There:

You will first fly into San Antonio International Airport. From there, you’ll be picked up by the outfitter and driven directly to the lodge to begin hunting that afternoon. It is a 2-hour drive from the airport to the main lodge. If you will be driving there, you will drive to Junction Texas, to the outfitter's lodge where you will meet up with your guide. 

Deposit and Payment Policy:

A 50% deposit of $4,250 is due to book this elk hunt in Texas. The full balance must be paid at the time of arrival at the lodge. This outfitter accepts credit/debit cards, checks, and cash.

Cancellation Policy:

Deposits are non-refundable. Dates can be transferred once at the outfitter's discretion, and may only be transferred to a different person with the prior approval of the outfitter. Upon any rescheduling, a $150 fee is to be paid directly to the booking agent.
