This predator hunt in Texas is a great way to have a bunch of fun and bag a bunch of animals! These hunts are conducted in the evenings and at night, so being able to make a quick accurate shot is a needed skill. You can get some great mounts and tanned hides out of this hunt.

About the Predator Hunt Animals:

Texas is home to lots of predator animals. These animals prey on livestock, exotic ranch animals, free-range wildlife, and pets, and are overall nuisance animals. For this hunt, you’ll have a chance to take coyotes, raccoons, gray foxes, bobcats, ringtail cats, porcupines, and rabbits.

Coyotes are the most abundant livestock predators in the West, killing hundreds of thousands of sheep, goats, and cattle each year. Coyotes are also widely distributed across the entire United States; and are still expanding their populations, ranging from dense populations in California, across both the Rocky and Appalachian Mountains, to recently inhabiting parts of the East Coast. Raccoons are another predator extremely common in Texas and are widely distributed across the US as a whole. They are omnivorous, having a diet consisting of 33% plants and the rest consisting of vertebrates and invertebrates. One of their favorite meals is eggs and hatchlings. Raccoons’ intelligence has also been shown to rival that of primates and is a very unique skill that these animals possess.

The gray fox is an animal widespread throughout Central and North America and was once the most common fox in the Eastern United States until deforestation and urbanization. The gray fox is smaller than other foxes, weighing in at an average of 7-15 pounds. They are prized for their pelts and have become a popular animals to hunt because of this. Bobcats are also distributed across Central and North America and are a popular animal to hunt for both sport and fur.

Bobcats prey on a variety of animals from insects and small rodents to deer depending on the animals available in their environment. They are also fond of eating domestic chickens and geese and are a nuisance for farmers. Ringtail cats are small mammals of the raccoon family and are characterized by their tails which have 14-16 black rings on them. They prey mainly on insects and small mammals but have also been known to feed on fish, carrion, and small reptiles. They are easily domesticated and were once used by miners to keep rodent populations under control.

Porcupines and rabbits are not predators but herbivores. Porcupines are the third largest rodent in the world and have coats of spiky quills. Rabbits are small mammals and are usually more active at night. More than half the world’s population of rabbits reside in North America, making Texas a perfect place to bag a bunch!

Predator Hunting Area and Terrain:

This outfitter uses different ranches for this predator hunt. The ranches usually will be rocky and hilly and will have some sort of brush cover of cactus or cedar. You can expect that most of the roads will be off-road trails so your guide will transport you with a 4x4 vehicle to help navigate the areas.

Texas Predator Hunt Lodge and Accommodations:

Depending on the hunting area, you can expect a wide variety of possible lodging experiences. This can range from the main lodge in Junction, to a hotel in Loredo, to very primitive setups out on game ranches, or to a luxury lodge located on the ranch, you will be hunting. The main lodge in Junction offers seven private bedrooms which have a common shared bathroom and shower, and an additional master bedroom that does have an en suite bathroom. It is a 2-star lodge and is basic, but the beds are comfortable and the food consists of good hearty Texas cooking.

The main communal room at this lodge has a bar, pool table, couch, tv, and seating area. This facility also has full internet and cell phone service so you can keep working or stay connected to family back home while you are in this camp. The primitive camps on the ranch locations may not offer cell or internet service depending on the location used.

A Typical Day Hunting Predators:

These hunts run from noon on the day of your arrival until noon on the day of your departure, with two full hunting days in between. This provides 3 full nights of predator hunting.

Day 1      Arrive at noon - Hunt p.m.

Day 2-3   Full Hunting Nights

Day 4      Hunt Early a.m. - Depart noon

You’ll arrive at the lodge in the afternoon on the first day, where you can get settled in and get your things put away in your room. Once you get squared away, you will be taken to a local store to purchase a Texas hunting license if you did not already get one beforehand. After this, you can head to the range and ensure your rifle is still zeroed after your trip. From here, you’ll have some downtime at the lodge until dinner. Then you’ll eat and head out for the evening. You will be able to take sandwiches and snacks with you from the lodge so you won’t get hungry during the night.

Once at the hunting location, you’ll typically be able to make a few stands (typically 30 minutes or so) calling for predators during the day. Sometimes these stands will be made while hunting out of a blind. Then once it gets dark, you’ll continue to make stands for predators periodically. While driving around the ranch location, you’ll make stands until the early hours of the morning. Around the early hours of the morning, you’ll head back to the lodge and sleep until around 10 -11 a.m., after which either breakfast or lunch will be served depending on your preference.

You’ll then rest up during the day and prepare to go back out hunting during the midafternoon. You’ll make plans for the evening, eat dinner and then, depending on the location you’re hunting, head back out around 6 p.m. This schedule can vary depending on weather conditions.

These hunts are very reliant on good weather and the ability to make quick and accurate shots. The average shot taken is between 50-100 yards. This outfitter has a very high success rate when all the varying factors are right.
