This is your chance to hunt Mountain Goat in British Columbia’s Cariboo Mountains with one of Canada’s most experienced guides. With over 42 years of experience guiding in the area, this is the outfitter that can put you on the mountain goat of a lifetime!
Rocky Mountain Goat Hunting
Mountain goats typically live in some difficult terrain to hunt in. There is “sheep shape” and then there is “goat shape”. Mountain goat hunts are known to be difficult due to the inaccessible places where goats like to hang out in. These hunts will utilize horses to pack you into remote areas that feature prime goat habitats. You will set up a base camp and begin hunting from there. It is possible that you may also set up a fly camp close to an area that has a goat that you are targeting.
The Cariboo Mountain Region of British Columbia
This outfitter holds the exclusive guiding rights to over 3,500 square miles of prime big game country bordering Wells Gray Provincial Park and the Cariboo Mountains. The terrain varies from slow meandering rivers where the great chinook salmon spawn to lofty alpine meadows and mountains reaching more than 10,000 feet. Roughly one third of this area is roadless wilderness, while the remainder has logging road access to his camps and hot spots for moose, deer and bear.
The outfitter has a wide variety of big game species to hunt within his territory. Silver-tipped grizzlies inhabit much of our rugged mountainous terrain but currently can’t be hunted. Black bears in various color phases are plentiful throughout the area. The average black bear here squares over 6 feet, with many going over 7 feet. Wolves are plentiful as well and can be taken on all his hunts, or as a hunt unto themselves. Canadian moose are widespread throughout this territory, with trophies taken each year in the 40" to 55" category. The mountain goats here are second to none, with record book billies taken annually. The region has become well known for its massive mature mule deer but, as in many areas, in recent years has declined in population. Whitetail deer have increased in the area in recent years and a popular hunt is a combination of whitetail and mule deer hunt. Many record book cats also come out of the Cariboo and our largest cougar taken there ranks # 4 in the world.
The Mountain Goat Hunt
This will be a pack horse hunt and riding horses for up to 5-6 hours a day will be required. Horses will be used to get you from the trailheads to the base camp. Base Camp may consist of remote trapper-style cabins or tented camps. On a typical day’s hunt, you will eat breakfast and depart at daybreak or shortly afterward on horseback for select locations where you can glass areas that goats like to frequent. Once a suitable billie is spotted, a plan will be made to get you into shooting range. You can expect shots to range from 50 yards up to 500 yards. Typical shots are from 100 – 250 yds.
The season for Mountain Goats in BC runs from Sept 1 – October 20.
Moose season runs Sept 10 – November 30, so if you are doing a combo hunt, book your hunt starting at or after September 10.
This outfitter normally runs 2-3 shifts, with a maximum of 4-5 mountain goat hunts booked each season. Therefore, these areas are not overhunted and continue to produce trophy goats year after year.
Due to the limited amount of mountain goat hunts available with this outfitter each year, booking your hunt well in advance is a necessity, as these hunts are sold out each and every year.
The Mountain Goat Hunting Camp
Most hunts are conducted from tented base camps. The outfitter will set up a typical “outfitter-style: tent complete with a camp stove for warmth and cooking. You will sleep on folding cots. You should bring a comfortable mattress pad and a sleeping bag good down to 20° F for the early hunts and down to 0° F for the November hunts. Breakfast and dinner will be prepared in camp. Lunch will consist of sandwiches and snacks that have been prepared in advance and will be eaten while in the field.
Proper fitting boots suitable for hiking and climbing in the mountains are a necessity for this hunt. Kennetrek’s mountain boots with 400 gm Thinsulate insulation are perfect fits for this hunt! A good rain suit is also a must to ward off any sudden showers that may occur during this time of year. Baggage should be duffel bags and rain flys for your duffle bags (if not waterproof) are also a plus for this hunt.
The Mountain Goat Outfitter
This outfitter has been hunting, fishing, and running traplines in this region for his whole life. He has continuously outfitted in this area for 42 years and over time, has accumulated many great exclusive hunting areas from other outfitters retirements. His hunting areas now cover over 4,000 sq miles of game-filled wilderness habitat. He maintains over 200 miles of trail, allowing for horse access into remote areas that receive very little hunting pressure.
This outfitter has some special and unique areas that allow for someone that is not in mountain shape to be able to harvest a mountain goat. He has some spots that allow you to glass down on some plateaus that the goats like to feed on. Other areas offer bedding areas for the goats at the base of cliffs and slides that allow for an approach from within the timber at the base of the slopes to provide you shots from 100 – 200 yards. Only one or two of these special access backpack hunts are available each year, so if a goat is still on your radar, but you are well past your prime, it may still be possible!
